SRK, in a candid chat with the Saudi Arabian platform MBC Group, revealed that he was the initial choice for director Rajkumar Hirani’s blockbuster hits ‘Munna Bhai MBBS‘ and ‘3 Idiots.’
Recounting the early days of their friendship, Khan shared that he and Hirani are actually old friends. At a time when Hirani was transitioning from an editor to a director, he revealed that he approached him with the script of ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’. At the time, Khan was shooting for ‘Devdas.'”I still remember, I was shooting a scene for Devdas, in which I was going to pass away. And this gentleman came and said, ‘I have a script,’ and I said, ‘Okay, let’s meet day after tomorrow, I’m doing this film next,'” Khan recalled.
Sharing his excitement about the project, ‘Munna Bhai MBBS,’ the actor revealed that they intended to collaborate on the film but was forced to pass it on as he had faced an unexpected spine surgery and needed a recovery period.
He further added that the disappointment didn’t end there, as years later, Hirani approached him again for ‘3 Idiots.’ The duo collaborated on the script and casting, with Khan assuring his commitment to the ambitious project. However, due to a schedule conflicts caused by delays in Khan’s films and another injury setback, the role was eventually passed on to Aamir Khan.
Reflecting on the incident, Shah Rukh Khan revealed, “I told him to finish it off. It was a very ambitious project, 3 Idiots, so I said, ‘You can’t have an actor coming from one film and going to another, so you please go ahead and do this.’ So, that one didn’t happen.”
While Shah Rukh and Hirani eventually collaborated on the recent action-comedy film ‘Dunki,’ the iconic roles that he turned down, eventually became synonymous with other actors.
